What We've Learned

Media has a huge impact on our society as a whole. It influences our everyday lives, informs us on the new updates of the world, and keeps our society connected. We’ve shown the impact of these fields by posting information expressing different aspects of that particular career field and how that job is intertwined with media. We believe it is important to know the influences of media on our everyday lives. The evolution of technology and media outlets has become a necessity to our fields and make them what they are today.

Overall, all of these fields are very important in today’s society. Each affects us in so many ways resulting in different feelings or emotions. The overall task of these career fields is to communicate with the public through different mediums of technology. We’ve been able to share our learnings through this project, which has let us grow as students and future workers. There are so many new ideas and concepts that have been taught to us through the sources we have explored. This project has let us enhance our knowledge and love for our preferred fields and helped us expand our appreciation for these jobs. We have also been able to inform others of what we’ve discovered in hopes of inspiring others to pursue these fields or any field they choose. The blog has let us learn, teach, and discover what we really want to do after college.

Jobs constantly change over the years and new advancements are made. Due to these improvements we, as a community and society, advance as well. While we grow as a community, our perspectives, beliefs, and ways of thinking shift. Technology and media can control us in a plethora of ways. It can alter the way we feel about people, to what we do on a day-to-day basis. We’ve learned through our blog how media actually plays out in today's society. We have been able to learn more about our preferred communication fields and how they affect the public. Journalism, marketing, and media and info are fields that we, as citizens, come in contact with everyday. By exploring more about these fields, we have learned the impact they have, been introduced to new terminology and the ethics that one must follow to be successful in such a job. We have been able to enhance our knowledge about our future career opportunities and what we must do to be the best.

The field of journalism is underrated and usually a hot topic for negativity, shown through the post “Not the Worst Jobs of 2016.” This field has been changing throughout generations. It’s shifted from newspapers all the way to mobile phone apps. This field is probably the one that has changed the most out of any career field. It’s also very important to the public, whether they know it or not. It’s where they get all their information from and it helps shape their lives. We turn on the TV and watch the news, open the news app to read what’s happening, and check social media to see what the hottest topic. It’s all journalism based and made to influence us explained in the post “Reporting from the front lines with mobile journalism.” The field of journalism is a strong field that is still relevant in today’s society. We turn to the news when scared or want to learn some new information and the field of journalism is really what fills those needs. This field of communication is very important and there’s a lot to learn about it and how it plays a role in our lives.

The great thing about majoring in communications is that it gives such a broad range of possible career choices. That could be ranging anywhere from working with broadcasting, audio recording, production or even public relations. When looking at the evolving music industry you can see the countless amounts of changes over the past decade. With everything turning digital and the new advancements in technology, it has impacted the music industry in numerous amounts of ways. Whether it’s how an artist can positively influence their fans or viewers online, coming up with creative ways of releasing one’s music like through commercials or different marketing strategies on promoting your “brand” or music on apps like Instagram, and the new inventions of online streaming platforms, explained in the post “What Changed the Music Industry.” Online streaming platforms like Pandora, Apple Music and Spotify have led to the recent boom in the industries revenue, shown in the statistics in one post called “The Industry's Revenue is Predicted To Skyrocket.” But some may worry or argue that the beloved use of vinyl is a dying “breed” if you will.  The recurring theme that’s been presented is how everything is evolving and the ways of media and technology are creating huge ripple effects in every aspect of our chosen major, communications.

When working with advertising and communication, one must have creativity, consistency, patience, and hard work. The concept of marketing/advertising is to get a message and or product out to the public. Marketers want to make sure people are aware of a product and the benefits or even the negative effects of a product. We address our message through a handful of ways. We market through media, newspapers, radio, billboards, and more. As a society we depend on the method of marketing to guide us through our daily lives. Due to media marketing/advertising, we become informed on products we may need in the future, new deals, what new restaurants to try, entertainment, and much more. In the blog post “7 Key Strategies That You Must Learn from Apple's Marketing” you are able to see and understand different strategies companies take to be successful in marketing their products. While reading this article you are able to understand why the marketing world take specific steps to bring their product to the top. Marketing is such a powerful platform to have and using such methods has become a necessity around the world.

The field of media and information is another necessity that is, in fact, fueled by journalism. This field involves all aspects of life and allows people to connect and share ideas, concepts and begin trends. Social media plays one of the biggest roles in society today. Before social media, we had no way to effectively, collectively contemplate ways to live. On the opposite end of the spectrum, social media tears relationships apart, stirs up arguments about social, political and/or economic issues, and creates war between different ethnicities, races, religions and many other types of groups. Social media is very deceptive and manipulative yet attractive because although it creates problems, it is a natural human response to desire other human interaction. It establishes figures whom social media users respect and trust to guide them for whatever reason. In our blog post “Artists and Media and Sponsorship” you can observe our take on that. In some aspects, social media can be used as a marketing tool that perfectly advertises products or services to millions of users. The blog post “#8 Practicing your knowledge” shows this.

Metallica Is Back

Over the past few weeks, famous band Metallica has been telling fans that their first studio album in eight years, Hardwired…To Self-Destruct, will be ‘available everywhere November 18’.

And they actually pulled through with that promise, with a little bit of a surprise that definitely was not expected.

Their full album is available on Apple Music, Spotify and even available to stream on the bands official YouTube page with its complete own music video

Not only does this come as a shock because they could be a start of a new trend on releasing music to YouTube but its also because the bands long time manager, Q Prime’s Peter Mensch, called YouTube “the devil” in a recent interview with BBC.

He said, “YouTube? They’re the devil. If someone doesn’t do something about Youtube we’re screwed. Its over. Turn off the lights.”

Metallica owns the master copyright to Hardwired…To Self Destruct, one of Q4’s most anticipated relates via their own Blackened Recording Inc. So this means that it was actually their own idea to link up with YouTube.

So maybe its because they knew that their fans were already going to download it themselves so why not just make it that much easier for them to be available to it.

Or maybe Metallica was just being Metallica and purposely trying to be controversial and doing the unexpected. I only say this because of the bands reputation when looking at how they have dealt with companies that their music is released on. In 2000 the band created a lawsuit against Napster suing them for $10 million.

Six Types of Misinformation Circulated This Election Season

This week I came across an article by Columbia Journalism Review talking about false content that was put out through news sites, stations, and that circulated during the election season. The article looked at 6 different times fake sources were being used:

1. Authentic material used in the wrong context:

One of trumps first ads projects migrants crossing across Mexico. But in fact the footage was of migrants crossing the country of Morocco. The footage was not fake, it was real footage. But the context the video was played during the ad was in fact fake. This is because the migrants were not actually walking across Mexico.

2. Imposter news sites designed to look like brands we already know

During The campaigns of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, both twitter accounts as well as twitter accounts from members of their families retweeted and commented on fake news article from fake news sites. There was one incident the article talks about where Eric Trump commented on a fake ABC article about Hillary's email scandal.

3. Fake News Sites

fake news sites have had the most scrutiny sine the election season began. People made fake news article and sent them around the world via social media to make money. An example of this that the article gave was there was a fake news story out of the Pope endorsing Donald Trump.

4. Fake Information

Fake information was always presented through ads, graphics, and even on social media by the two campaigns. The example the article gave was that there were a couple ads going around across social media that Clinton voters could tex their vote in while Trump voters had to go to the polls. Though this is 100% fans a lot of Trump supporters were enraged.

5. Manipulated Content

Images were sent across social media of pictures that were altered to sway ons side of voters. An example that the article gave was a picture that showed a policeman arresting an illegal immigrant trying to vote. In the picture you can clearly tell that the policeman is fake.

6. Parody Content

On twitter a lot of famous people have parody accounts. This is when fake people pretend to be the real twitter accounts of the person and send out bad tweets. Twitter users reacted to these tweets before looking if the account is real or not. To tell if the account was the actual account, a twitter users need to look for the verified symbol on the profile page.

Media Isolation

When I write blog topics every week, I tend to write them based upon the encounters I face within that week. This week, I noticed I hadn't had many experiences at all. I hadn't had contact with any of my friends or anyone that I was close to in the physical realm which I thought was strange. But then I thought again, was it really strange? I have a Twitter, Facebook and Instagram account which I use very frequently. All of my friends and family are also quite active on there so that was my only means of contact. Recently, (this week) social media has been booming with activity. I feel like this recent activity burst has something to do with why I haven't seen anyone at all this week. There is a study that I learned about in my Media and Information (MI 101) class today called the Hypodermic needle theory. The theory claims that people socially isolate themselves and respond to media messages in a mindless, uniform manner. I believe this theory proves why all my friends and peers have been trapped in their homes. Either that, or their ducking me, which would suck.

The hypodermic needle theory supports the implication that media is able to trigger a specific, desirable response in its target audience by "injecting" or "shooting" an appropriate message into them. In this case, media is suggesting to my friends that they should pay closer attention to it because everyone seems to be so active on it at the moment. I'm thinking it is because of the recent election coupled with the continued killings of african americans, flint's continued water crisis and the upcoming thanksgiving feast that apparently, no one can wait for. Another name for this theory is the magic bullet theory, which instead of using the metaphor of a direct injection delivered by a syringe, uses the metaphor of a bullet shot by a gun, in which the bullet is the message intended for the target audience and the gun is the media outlet. Long story short, we're brainwashed.

Here is a short article further explaining media isolation if anyone was interested.

What Makes a Broadcaster

Being a broadcaster isn't a profession that everyone could do. It takes skill and dedication. They must be willing to work long hours, even when they don't want to. They have to be able to speak well and communicate with the public in a way that everyone will comprehend. "Top 10 Qualities of a Great Broadcaster" describe a few traits they must have.

They have to be able to handle pressure, it states. This is very important because you must be able to deal with a big problem that arises. For example, the broadcasters during 9/11 had to hold themselves sane in order to keep American sane. They must also be able to get things done on time in order to be shown to the public at the right time.

Communication is most important for sure. They have to be able to speak clear for everyone to understand. If we can't understand what the broadcaster is saying, it's a waste of news.

Good personalities are a necessity in this type of job. They must be a like-able person in order to create a bond with the viewer. They must be happy and professional at the same time. They have to make the viewers want to come back.

The list in the article goes on and on. They pretty much must contain all, or most, of these in order to be good in this field. Everything the workers who put together the show do it played through them and if they can't deliver well to the audience, the viewers will not come back. Personality in this job, in fact any job, is key to being good and professional. Broadcasters have a very important job and their personality is a major factor in how they perform.

Millennials Say No to Intrusive Placements

Within the Article “Younger Internet Users More Likely to Block Ads Worldwide” it expresses how Millennials say no to intrusive placements. Nearly one in five internet users around the world blocks ads, according to eMarketer September 2016 research. Cantor TNS has surveyed internet users in over 50 countries and found that around 18% of the users block ads online. According to the Kantar TNS survey, blocking ads does not mean being closed off in principle to marketing messages from brands. Marketers should take that data into account and work around or with that factor, It was expressed that a younger audience end up ad blocking. Younger audiences tend to block ads that are irritating and follow them all the way down the end of the internet page. Marketers and advertisement should approach internet ads in a more creative and intriguing way you reach to a lot of internet users from around the world.

The way that the article was presented was informal when showing and expressing the data found through surveys.

How Trump Could Be of Help To the Music Industry

As crazy as it sounds, Donald Trump could be a beneficial source to the Music Industry.

With reforming the countries antiquated music copyright laws there is now new hope that President Donal Trump and Republican congress could finally achieve the long debated reforms. In addition to Trump winning the white house, Republicans have also dominated the House and Senate. This will eliminate the possibility of a three year debate on the copyright reform, ultimately taking steps backwards not forwards.

The hope for this reform lays in the hands of U.S. Representative, Bob Goodlatte who's chairs in the House Judiciary Committee. Record labels, songwriters, publishers and artists hope that the music copyright reform will have more favorable digital authority.

Trumps stance on the issue isn't very clear or even known but some partners disclose new confidence to The Tennessean newspaper.

The anticipation stems from the belief that Trump’s conservative economic views will match to support for deregulating copyright lays that songwriters and publishers say are too difficult for the professions

Some supporters of this copyright reform are tired of waiting because of the Obama administration’s ties to Google. Earlier this year, following reviews of the federal consent act that regulate the nations two largest music licensing organizations, the Department of Justice announced it would enforce 100% licensing. ASCAP, BMI, Nashville Songwriters Association International and other groups opposed 100% licensing which would require a performance rights organization to license a song no matter how small its ownership stake is in the copyright.

U.S. representative Doug Collins who sponsored the Songwriters Equality Act, his proposal faced opposition from digital services who argue that the bill would just be a setback for streaming services. Another bill, the Fair Play, Fair Pay Act, which would make broadcasters pay royalties to record labels and artists when songs are played on the radio, has faced opposition from the National Association of Broadcasters

Following Trumps win, Collins expressed optimism for what it will mean for this reform. He said, "We believe that Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States will benefit copyright reform and foster creativity across our nation. We’ve always believed that copyright reform is a conservative issue with significant implications for business and that government has too often interfered in this dimension of the free market. Our Founders understood the value of intellectual property, and I will continue to lead efforts to ensure that these rights are protected now and into the future.”

But whats unclear is where Trump stands on the copyright reform and how Google may influence his stance if and when the issue is inform of the House. Unlike Hilary Clinton, Trump did not give any detailed policies regarding the regulations on the topic.

How 2016 Changed Journalism

2016 was a big year for the entire country. With such a big election happening the profession of journalism was working at an all time high. Even with putting in all the work to cover the election, the election did not repay them. No profession was affected more by the election than Journalism.

The coverage of Donald Trump by media was kind of sickening. When he first announced his presidency everyone thought of it was a joke. When he finally won the republican nomination he did not receive any praise just scrutiny.

But how as media personal could you say good things about Trump when he said some of the disgusting things that he did? It was very tough for journalists to figure out how to cover both Trump and Hillary Clinton. If they cover Trump too little the media would be scrutinized for being biased towards Clinton. If they tried to even out the coverage Clinton supporters would argue that the media is supporting what Trump has said in the past. " Journalists job is to educate the public so they can make an informed decision."

That did not happen for journalists doing the 2016 election. Instead it was scrutinizing and figuring out how much bias to give to one candidate or the other. So how will journalism cover future elections?

#1 Asking Questions and Breaking Assumptions

Why is Media Important?
Media is important because it influences our everyday lives and decisions. There was a study I recently covered for a project in my Understanding Media and Info class about if Social media makes you smarter or dumber. The result of the study was that thinking and linking together as one people on a social media website increased the flow of group analytical thinking but decreased the flow of individual analytical thinking.

RivalIQ.com

Are their different types of media devices besides social media?
In media there are plenty of different types of devices besides social media as a means to communicate an idea or express a thought. Social can be utilized to access some of the devices though. Like when using social, you can organize event groups. For example today, Facebook was used to organize a rally in support of anti bigotry, racism and discrimination at 5:30 today. Media can also be used in advertisement form in which someone is persuaded to purchase a product or use a resource in order to profit the owner of the resource or product. This type of advertising could be through a television, radio station, internet website and the list goes on.

TannerFriedman.com

Is there money in the media?
There is a phenomenal amount of money in media. If you think about it, media controls every aspect of our lives. If we didn't have media we wouldn't know what to buy, what to like/dislike, what to eat and even what to wear. Media could market anything at all to us and we would by it because the media said so. But who is the media? As a matter of fact we are. So in a cycle of using and following media we ultimately tell each other to use certain products or services. This is why people pursue field in media because it is almost self sufficient. All it takes is an idea.
Blogs.BabyCenter.com
Is there bad media?
I know now that there is such a thing as bad media. Bad media is misleading and does not support your moral beliefs. Even though we know it doesn't support our beliefs we still chose to utilize it. For example, the corporation McDonalds has been marketing "happy meals to kids ever since they were created. But a movie (aha another source of media) called "Food Inc." exposes McDonalds for all the dastardly unhealthy ways they make our food items. The craziest part is, the bad media is so set on taking money from you that they market you items that will shorten your life span.
Viralscape.com

How does media play a role in benefiting society?
Media plays a role in benefiting society by connecting everyone. This election is the biggest, most impactful example. Donald Trump won the presidency which we were all able to witness through some type of media whether it your television, radio, twitter or anything. Once he won, people were going through extreme anxiety and as a result the suicide hotlines were busy. This outlet that helps talk people through extremely rough times, was closed. Media can help benefit society by providing moral support and many other things.

The book I used for this was my "Media Now: Understanding Media, Culture and Technology" book for my Understanding Media and Info class (MI 101)

Election Media Coverage

With the election today, I think covering how the media portrays the elections would be a good topic to discuss. Biased or not, we observe how the media broadcasts the information of the election. For the past year, that's all TV news has been; candidates talking to cities, addressing current topics, debating against each other, etc. Frontline has made a study post about election coverage. It talks about how they can favor one candidate over the other and broadcast more to boost their ratings.

"The press doesn't favor certain candidates because it's engaged in a vast conspiracy...reporters like a good story," it claims. This is very true in my eyes. The public only likes to see what they find interesting. If Donald Trump is ranting poorly about immigrants in a debate, the odds are that clip will be the focal point for the next couple days news broadcasts. They show what we want.

The story talks about how Trump has dominated the most media coverage throughout the beginning of the election process. In my opinion, he's played it smart. The more coverage, the more your name is known. Is it biased that the media has broadcasted more of him than any other candidate? I don't believe so. He's playing to what the country sees. If we turn on the news and Trump is on, that's what we're going to watch. Not biased, but smart.

It's hard to say if it worked until the polls close. What we do know is the more coverage you have, the more your name is known and the more people will research the beliefs and ideas of those candidates.

Behavioral Economists Can Make You a Healthier Consumer and Smarter Marketer

In the video article "Behavioral Economists Can Make You a Healthier Consumer and Smarter Marketer" goes into depth about what make us choose our decisions. The article especially goes into depth about the decisions we make when it comes to eating well and losing weight.
It was stated that “If people made purely rational decisions, life might be much easier for marketers is selling products and services”.  In the study conducted they test whether if a company gives you two 12 ounce cups when you order a large drink does that make the customer drink more or less. It was found that restricting the size of a cup will cause people to consume less soda. This plays a huge part in marketing, you can make or have a huge influence on people based on what you put out to the public without any other choices.

This video was very interesting and it showed a different part of marketing and how people make decisions when it comes to the product you use.

How Media Can Lead to Research

Media influences our everyday lives. What we see on television encourages us to act certain ways and purchase certain products. Media even  allows us to spread awareness about certain ordeals. For instance, the movie Concussion starring Will smith. In Pittsburgh, accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated concussions in the course of normal play. An article called "Muscle and Medicine" reports an article stating this, "What are the long-term health risks of the most popular sport in the United States? The movie, recounting real-life events with some creative license, shows Omalu being stonewalled by the NFL as he tries to ring the alarm on the effects of repeated head trauma on players’ health. His character is warned in one scene, “You’re going to war with a corporation that owns a day of the week.” This article suggests to me that people are starting to notice more that something had to be done. This could lead to the fall of a corporation.

The Netflix documentary 13TH makes an attempt to raise awareness of crimes committed by the government against black people. They abused the use of the jailing system so much. For example, the documentary state prisons were required to keep prisons full even though if there weren't crimes being committed.
Source: Netflix

The most alarming attempt at a wake up call was the movie Purge: Election year. In this thrilling second reality it is now legal to commit any crime at a certain time of the year. The movie entitled election year just so happened to be in theatres the year of the most crucial election of all time. There is racism and hate arising in this world and the movie Purge: Election Year confirmed that this nightmare could be very possible.

These movies and many others attempt to raise awareness on certain topics like the election or hidden   disasters.

Reporting from the front lines with mobile journalism

Reporters in media and news channels are having to figure a new challenge. The journalism industry is always changing and evolving. Journalists are always facing new changes and are finding new ways to produce, present and film news. In recent months filming stories and developing events with big cameras is becoming too hard and taking too long. Journalists have found it easier to take out the same device that every person always has in their pocket......a cellphone.

According to an article on Mashable by Chris Michaels he says that, "Modern broadcast newsrooms need a solution that can keep live video airing without interruption, and that can enable a local stringer or freelancer to be up and running in minutes, not hours or days. The easiest way to capture and live stream the events as they happen is to utilize local mobile journalists."

More recently in the United States people are capturing great video of events as they unfold. Examples of these events are protests, sports events, even just a fight at a local school or something equivalent to that. With having quick video on a cell phone a person can easily put it on a social media site and have that source of media spread quicker than waiting for the 11 pm news hour to report on it.

According to the article news stations and companies are trying to find a way to get stories out quicker as well. The article states, " There is a huge opportunity for newsrooms to provide dedicated apps that can deliver exclusive content directly to their ingest points and editing bays. Not only can CNN, NBC, Reuters and the AP get people on the ground faster; they are able to represent multiple viewpoints with streams coming in from various coverage areas." These apps will get news from different viewpoints quicker to the viewers that desire to read it.

Mobile journalism is the future for news. Its more efficient and brings in more potential viewers.

The Industry's Revenue is Predicted To Skyrocket

After a long downward spiral, the music industry is finally back and growing again for the first time in over a decade thanks to streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. And this is just the beginning

According to analysts at Macquarie, who predict that recorded music revenues will double in the next 10 years. The Macquarie Group is a global investment banking and financial services group that provide advisory and investment services to institutional, corporate and retail clients around the world.

The analyst wrote that they expect recorded music revenue to grow about $15 billion in 2016, which is a 5% increase. And by 2025 they predict the number to be $30 billion. And in comparison to the revenue in 1999, which was $40 billion, this is nothing. This would be an insane comeback for an industry that has been stumped for the past decade.

Macquarie says that the main sources that it will take for the industry to get back on its tracks is the continues ascendance of streaming services. Weather thats Spotify, Pandora or to Amazon’s new music services. They said “streaming will grow to 50% of the market by mid-2019 and to 80% in 2025, based on our forecasts.” The industry will expand while taking the revenues up with it.

“We see upside to this level if Spotify’s launch in Japan, the second-largest territory and the one with the highest percentage of sales from physical, is successful,” the analysts wrote. “Amazon Unlimited Music (including mid-tier price point with Echo) should also boost growth in the UK and Germany (also a large physical market). Pandora Plus may also support even higher growth in the US.”

Prompt #6 Developing Journalism

Journalism is a shifting industry. Like most fields of work, they are constantly evolving as technology enhances and new ideas are created. Journalism started as newspapers and then moved to television then to apps on our smartphones. We don't know where it will go next, but we can reflect on what's it has done and what it has done positively and negatively.

An article published in SAGE Publications Journalism explains some key points that should be considered in this developing field. This article describes how the show The Newsroom received negative feedback from critiques because of its depiction of the profession. The article goes against these statements by explaining how those critiques realized the truth. It states, "The closing and/or downsizing of many US newspapers are just one indication that the industry and the institution of journalism are suffering." As this many be true for the newspaper side of journalism, as that side decreases, the more mobile and technical side increases.

The article also talks about how "journalism has gone through several crises during the past century, especially during structural and technological changes." This is very true because, as I've stated, it's shifted from newspaper to apps. Also, what is shown to us has changed a lot over the years too to accommodate to what we find interesting. It's added things like health to the already broadcasted topics like news and weather.

This article mostly explains how The Newsroom was attacked but made many points that relate to the overall field of journalism. "The rise of the Internet has created many opportunities for journalists but also has dealt serious blows to journalism," it claims. This is also very true for many reasons. First, the creation of the Internet pulled people away from the physical work that started the field. Second, the creation made so many new opportunities for journalists from bloggers to photographers.

Overall, as the world becomes more technologically advanced, the field of journalism shifts but also remains the same. There are still newspapers that are printed everyday, but quicker and easier ways of getting the information is there also. It all depends on the person wants the latest updates.
