Mass Hysteria/Predictions

Nowadays, forms of media like TV shows and movies have gotten better at creating real life situations that could actually possibly happen. Humans are great at predicting and creating predicaments just to logically solve them. Last week I discovered a British TV show called Black Mirror in which the episodes are set up in a twilight zone type of matter. Each episode is an independent story. Each episode somehow involves a form of technology or media that puts the characters in invigorating situations. In the very first episode the princess of Great Britain by a terrorist organization. The Prime minister is responsible for finding her but the catch is that in order to get her back, at the demand of the terrorist, the prime minister must have sexual intercourse with a pig. The video of the terrorist threat was put up on youtube first.
Screen watch.com

This immediately made the issue a world matter. Youtube is accessible to everyone in the world who owns a computer. This video of the princess giving the demand of the terrorist went viral in a matter of hours. The more this video was shared around, the more crucial is was for the prime minister to find the princess. At first, the public voted in a poll someone mad that 76% did not want the prime minister to have sex with a pig and focus on finding the princess. About an hour after the poll, another video was released showing one of the terrorist severing the princess' finger. Another vote was drawn and out of mass hysteria and public fear, 86% of the world thought the prime minister should have sex with a pig in order to get the princess back. This is the effect fear has on the public. A simple video made an extreme statement over the entire globe.

Kanye Has Something To Say

The well known Kanye West claims that if Frank Ocean’s new album doesn’t receive any nominations at the 2017 Grammys for his two recent releases, Blonde and the “visual album” Endless he will not be attending the event.

West says at his concert in Oakland, California  (Oct. 22), “I’ll tell you this right now, if his album is not nominated in no categories, I’m not showing up to the Grammys...As artists, we’ve got to come together to fight the bullshit.”

West’s comment arrives less than a week after Billboard broke the sad news that Blonde and Endless will in fact not appear on the Grammy nominees list when it is revealed in December. A source confirmed that neither album was submitted for consideration by Oceans labels or management team even though both albums were released before the Grammy eligibility cutoff date.

Frank Ocean had been “in hiding” since his album Channel Orange was released in 2012. With the success of Channel Orange fans and listeners have been wanting more and more. In late 2013, Ocean hinted than an album would arrive the following summer. And then last year, he teased a July release date. So with the constant demand of new music he finally released not one but two albums this past August.

Prompt #2 Ethics in Journalism

Just like in any profession journalists have a set of ethical rules that they need to follow. Being ethical is more prominent in journalism than most professions because that is how you are looked at as a writer. According to the Ethical Journalism Network there are five main ethical rules that journalists need to follow. In this blog I will talk about three of them that are more important than others.

1. Truth and Accuracy:
Journalists are writing to the public. They need to be truthful and get all the facts right. How will readers or news stations trust you as a writer if you are not giving out truthful information and getting your facts wrong? This is the main rule in all of journalism. When writing an article always source check and fact check what you are writing before you submit to make sure all of what you are writing is correct.

2. Independence:
For most of the time journalists should not be biased towards one side or another, especially when writing for politics. This rule can be a little flexible because if you are a beat writer for a sports team you are writing to a particular fan base not the whole country.

3. Humanity:
Yes journalists must report news no matter how bad it is. But a journalists job is not to ruin someones career. As journalists we report the facts and the story but not to cause harm to the person as well.

These rules of ethics correspond to my one ethical rules. I try to be as truthful and as accurate as possible when I am writing something for school or even just telling a story to a friend. I want to make sure that I have the story correct. It is very tough for anyone to not be biased to one side or the other but I try to do y best to look at something from both sides of the argument or whatever it is to get a better view of the situation. Spreading gossip is just like being inhumane. I believe that trying to ruin someones reputation is very disrespectful so I try to not spread any gossip.

Beyond the field of journalism most people would be able to guess what these ethical rules.

By not following these rules that affects you professionally because it will be harder to find a job if you are known for example for not telling the truth in your articles. That is why it is important to follow these ethical rules as a journalist.

7 Key Strategies That You Must Learn from Apple's Marketing

7 Key Strategies That You Must Learn from Apple’s Marketing

In this online article by Neil Patel he expresses and goes into depth about what strategies Apple’s Marketing team does that makes it so successful. In today’s society you see a majority of people using Apple produces and you ask yourself what makes Apple so successful? Its the marketing team! Neil Patel goes over the main strategies Apple uses when it come to marketing and he states that we should take pointers from them.

Just a few reasons that Apple is so successful is because they are good with design and utility and having those two qualities due to the type of product they have is very important.

1. Rethink the Need for Advertising

The usual way to go is to drop a lot of money on PPC ads with Google or Facebook when you want to increase sales, but Apple has done different strategies to make their sales increase. Such as product placement (especially with celebrities and in popular shows) and with buzz created through positive reviews in the media.

Even if you do not have a product as high up as apple you still could use that strategy to build your product brand.

2. Avoid Price Wars by Emphasizing Your Unique Value Proposition

Most entrepreneurs and companies believe that they have to compete with prices to stay relevant and compete in the product world. But Neil Patel states that “That is false”. “You can actually hurt your business by doing this and Apple knows it”.

Competing on the basic of price could lead to a “race to the bottom”.

3. Keep Your Marketing and Your Products Simple

The concept of more is better is not always true.

Its know that Apple recognizes this and understands that technology consumers often get overwhelmed. This can be true with many other industries as well.

Apple is known for keeping it that same and simple and the consumers of Apple loves it.

What Apple’s ads presents how the product could change your life instead of the features.

4. Know Your Audience and Talk to Then in Their Language

Many individuals are visual people and they like to see images and videos on what this do and what impact they will have on you personally.

Apple puts the details and description of what the product does “below-the-fold-

Apple consumers will see images and words that they are familiar with and understand. That is what consumers love and Apple hits it spot on.

5. Design a Better Customer Experience

The “Apple experience” includes elements from every aspect of the process of purchasing the product at hand. This experience allows you to compare different product- versions, trying out products in an Apple store, actually buying the item, receiving it, unwrapping and setting up the product.

6. Aim at Your Prospects’ Emotions

Apple emotionally connected with its consumers, when looking back on Apple commercials you will see that people are relaxing, and enjoying life with the new product they have purchased. Apple created real life situations were we could relate.

Emotional connections are the key to success in marketing. It’s what makes certain stories, and videos go viral.

The way this article was presented was very appealing, I was able to connect and understand they different things that were going on through the eyes of Apple’s Marketing Team. Neil Patel showed facts and reliable information the audience could use for reference.

7. Build a Community of Users or Consumers

Apple has built one of the most hardcore fan bases for any brand, anywhere in the world.

Apple has created a brand personality and culture that’s cool, fun, and friendly — the opposite of some of its competitors. Apple makes customers want to belong to that community.

Apple smartly capitalized on the universality of that self-perception, which made its customers believe that the brand understands them and is like them.

Broadcast TV is Still Important

Whether we know it or not, broadcasted television still plays a major role in our lives. Over the years, as technology has changed, it has been the only thing that has remained the same. Its always up-to-date, reliable, and has been a place to turn to when we need new information about what's going on in our world.

This media blog makes some strong and valid points. It states that local TV is trustworthy. This idea is very true because, as I stated before, it's the only thing that's stayed the same. With all the new technology, broadcast TV is and will always be there. Those who have watched that station for years will trust it very much because of the bond they have developed.

It also talks about how it is live and local. The importance of proximity in news is most important. If you live in Detroit, you don't care what happens in Orlando. We want to hear about things that are close and important to us that actually mean something. Local news stations do exactly that.

I think it's also the easiest way to receive news. You can turn on the news and hear everything that's going on in the day in 5 minutes or you could read a whole entire newspaper for the same information. It saves so much time and is more engaging.  We can connect with the news and the friendly attitudes the anchors give off; you can't get that within a newspaper.

Overall, times are changing and we are advancing, but broadcast television is here to stay. Local news is the best way for humans to receive the newest information that our city and our country faces. It always will be there for us in a click of a button.

Views of Marketing Prompt

While doing research I came across two different types of articles that are related to the field of marketing.  The Media Research Blog, “Video advertising more lucrative than display ads” by Martha Stone was a blog post that showed and explained how video advertising units are considered to be far more valuable to publishers than premium display ads. Within the post she explains how and why that is happening through data given in a diagram. This diagram shows the cost of video advertising compared to the regular display advertising. It shows how and why video advertising has become so much more valuable in todays society and how the world of marketing is becoming more and more geared to online, social media, and more. For this article I would consider the audience to be anyone that is looking for data and or more information on numbers when it deals with video advertising compared to display advertising. This article was informal but was not written as a scholarly article.

The second article was “Marketing LR metro never easier for Chamber” by Mark Carter. This article was based upon the marketing experiences of a specific company. This article goes over the strategy, numbers, and results made by the company. "With our evolution in entrepreneurial, cultural, corporate, tech and residential growth, marketing metro Little Rock to prospective new businesses and talent has become much more dynamic," This was a statement made by the Regional Chamber President and CEO Jay Chesshir. The article goes over the statements made by Mr. Chesshir and explains the steps the company made with marketing/advertising. This articles audience is geared to anyone that wants to know more about marketing and what steps could be made to become successful with advertising. The article gives numbers and data that could be use when making marketing choices for your own benefit.

The two articles were different and has the same intended audience. The article by Mark Carter would be the information I would trust the most. His article gave us more concrete evidence and allowed the audience to see where he was getting his resources from. As the audience we would be able to look up the information given and in return see that the data given was correct

Michigan State Football--Writing for isportsweb.com

This Saturday I got an opportunity to travel to College Park, Maryland to be in the press box for the MSU vs Maryland game. While in the press box I wrote a game recap for my internship at isportsweb.com and also got the opportunity to interview head coach Mark Dantonio after the game.

Here is my game recap:

The Michigan State Spartans (2-5) dropped their fifth straight game after Saturday’s loss to the Maryland Terrapins (5-2), 28-17.
For the second straight game redshirt freshman Brian Lewerke got the start for the Spartans with Tyler O’Connor (toe) and Damien Terry (hand) both battling injuries.
Early in the game the Spartan offense made it clear what their plan was. With high winds being a factor Lewerke turned and handed the ball off to whoever was in the backfield and let him run his way in between the tackles. In the first quarter the workhorse was sophomore LJ Scott who carried the ball for 36 yards on nine carries. Very rarely did Lewerke throw the ball down field and when he took his shot…..a mistake ensued. Midway through the first quarter Lewerke under threw Donnie Corley down field and his pass was intercepted by Terrapins cornerback Alvin Hill.Coming into the game there was speculation on who would start for Maryland as well. When the Terrapins offense trotted out for their first drive it was senior, Perry Hills behind center.
Throughout the first quarter the Spartan defense held strong against the Terrapin offense, if it were not for penalties. Senior linebacker Riley Bullough got ejected on a targeting call with just under five minutes left in the quarter. While Bullough was in the game he had a rough night. He finished with three personal fouls and an ejection. Add that with a offsides and Maryland’s offense had life again.
After the game Michigan State Coach Mark Dantonio said that Bullough’s play during the game as well as his ejection was, ” Disappointing……Tough to say on the helmet to helmet play, some people said it was the shoulder but they make the call.”
On the same drive as the Bullough ejection the Terrapin’s offense struck first. Terrapin’s running back Lorenzo Harrison finished off a nine play 96 yard drive with an eight yard touchdown run. Maryland Head Coach DJ Durkin opened up the playbook early. Instead of going for the “gimme” point after touchdown, Kenneth Goins Jr. ran in a two-point conversion to bring the score to 8-0 in favor of the home team.
Michigan State had a great chance to answer the touchdown thanks to RJ Shelton who returned the ensuing kickoff past midfield to set the Spartan offense up with great field position. After a couple first downs…..and a couple penalties, the drive stalled. The first quarter finished at an 8-0 advantage for the Terrapins.
Michigan State finally cracked the scoreboard with under 10 minutes to go in the first half. LJ Scott scored on a 48 yard touchdown run that almost went untouched. This is the first time Scott has found the end zone since week three, at Notre Dame. The Spartans still trailed by one 8-7.
Maryland increased their lead with just under 6 minutes to go in the first half when Hills found wide receiver D.J. Moore all alone running down the middle of the field for a 36 yard touchdown pass. Moore beat Spartan safety Demetrius Cox who was well beyond 10 yards behind when he strolled into the end zone. Maryland kicker Adam Greene missed the PAT negating the earlier two point conversion and the Terrapin lead stood at a touchdown 14-7.
Regardless of being down for the majority of the first half, the Spartans would not throw away their game plan just yet. On the ensuing drive running back Gerald Holmes led the offense down the field with 50 rushing yards before finding pay dirt with 38 seconds left in the half to tie the score at 14 a piece. That score held going into half time.
Michigan State came out of the second half on fire. After a quick three and out by the defense, the offense got rolling. With the running combination of Scott and Lewerke the offense moved inside the Terrapin five yard line. MSU looked like they were ready to take their first lead of the game until……..wide receiver Monty Madaris was hit, the ball fell to the turf, and in a matter of seconds the scoring threat was over.
The Spartan offense had trouble converting red zone opportunities into points with two turnovers inside of the Terrapin 20 yard line.
Both defenses remained tough. Offenses were moving the ball but could not find any points to break the tie. That was until Michael Geiger hit a 34 yard field goal with just under two minutes to go in the third quarter to give the Spartans their first lead of the game at 17-14. That score held going into the fourth quarter.
Geiger has now hit 46 career field goals tying him at 6th all time in school history.
It would not take long for Maryland to answer. After a couple long runs by running back Ty Johnson, running back Kenneth Goins Jr capped off an eight play 75 yard drive with a two yard touchdown run. With a made PAT the Terrapins led 21-17.
Just as long as it took for Maryland to answer MSU’s last score, it took them just as long to end the game. With just over three minutes remaining in the game Hills found wide receiver Levern Jacobs crossing across the back of the end zone for a nine yard touchdown to complete a 10 play 82 yard drive. The Spartans trailed 28-17.
The 28-17 score would hold as the clock read three zeros and the Spartans’s losing skid increased to five games.
This is the first five game losing streak for MSU football since the 1991 season.
Michigan State also lost to Maryland for the first time since the 1950 season.
Coming up for the Spartans is a cross-state showdown against the Michigan Wolverines next Saturday.

Artists and Media and Sponsorship

Music probably has the strongest influence on people all across the world. Throughout time, music has started and ended wars, marked the age of freedom and all around has made peoples lives more intricate. In this era of popular music success thrives on positivity and promotion of good "vibes". Artists are being paid by companies to mesh their ideas and creative positivity with their products . This tactic has been working for years and continues to work today. For example, the social media app "snapchat" has been taken over by the world famous DJ, DJ Khaled. DJ Khaled has worked with the biggest names in music throughout his career like Kanye West, Jay Z and the list goes on. On snapchat he yells and talks about success and what "keys" it takes to be successful and unlock that door to victory. DJ Khaled, now promotes Ciroc in advertisements and in his music. He tells everyone that the "key to success" is to live healthy and happy. He wants people to eat good food and drink lots of water as well as ignore all your haters and focus on getting to the money. While very entertaining, DJ Khaled has worked his way up to the top of the food chain in the public eye.

The Miami New Times

Even newer artists like Lil Yachty have sponsorships from companies like sprite in collaboration wth basketball player Lebron James. Lil Yachty is only 19 years old. This proves that the age limit at which you can have a sponsor does not matter as well. This is the reason that conspiracy theories are made up about artists and how they do deals with the devil. Ultimately, money controls everything. If an artists sees an opportunity to get more money through sponsorship, why wouldn't that take it.

What Changed the Music Industry?

People involved in the music industry have an opinion on when and what changed the atmosphere of the business. Some say it was the creation of Microsoft in 1997 and some say it was the creation of Napster in 1999 which was the pioneer to sharing music in MP3 format. Maybe it was even when Apple created the first iPod in 2001, allowing people to listen to music on the go. Or was it actually the act of musicians taking into account that the music industry was in fact changing. These changes forced musicians to be innovative about their art.

Artist like John Mellencamp who early on noticed that the music industry evolving took action on this. Mellencamp was one of the first recording artists to record a song for a major corporation, producing Out Country for Chevy. Why was this such a big deal? Well because he had to think of a new way to produce his music while still profiting from it.

These new inventions of ways to listen to music put a halt on the promotion of records unless you were a huge name in the industry. Mellencamp saw what other people didn’t, that being that the normal and the old traditional ways of producing and making music were never going to be the same.

People in marketing also run into this same problem as those in the music industry. Consumers have so many options of how they can see promoted products. So they can easily avoid the annoying advertisements. Now marketing professionals have to think of other ways to get their product noticed just like artists.

One main way musicians have adapted to this is by being very interactive with fans through social media. By generating followers through social media and engaging with them makes more of a personal connection which in the end can help advertise for concerts or merchandise. Love or hate them, the social media influencers or people who have a large audience on the web have an upper hand when promoting their products.

There’s was new app called Challenged, allowing users to make daily challenges with friends and celebrities focusing on social awareness. This new startup app got involved with celebrity Nash Grier, who has a total of 28.7 million followers on social media (and growing) and the app ended up being in the top 20 lifestyle apps in just a few months. This all segways into how you place your product.

Whatever your point of view on the new ways of digital- music streaming, you may want to get on board with it. Some artists are now even giving their music our for free, like Radiohead and U2. In 2007, Radiohead released In Rainbows for free, asking fans to pay for what they thought their download was worth. And in 2014, U2’s album Songs of Innocence was automatically downlaoded to every iTunes user for free to listen to. The idea of course is to get the music into the hands of the customers first before it is illegally streamed elsewhere or before it is available on other music services like Pandora. It allows artists to provide a particular experience with the consumer, ultimately controlling their view.

On the other hand for businesses, traditional ways of promotion like commercials are slowly but surely losing effectiveness. With less and less TV viewers and people avoiding commercials with the new addition to ad blockers it makes it that much harder for companies to get their product out there and in front of people. Instead business should start to take into consideration creative ways to where the consumers are headed. Again this being the idea of product placement.

Another new way musicians are taking control of their product is by maximizing their distribution of their product all over the internet such as Spotify, Pandora, and even podcasts. All though musicians don't necessarily make a lot of money from these services, it gives small bands or artists an opportunity to potentially be introduced by millions of users all over the world who would not normally listen to their music. The most important thing is to get ones product infront of the customer so that they become aware of their music. And as for podcasts, there are over 1 billion podcasts subscribers tuning in everyday.

All in all, with the evolving industry it makes marketers be more creative. It keeps those involved in the music industry or marketing companies on their toes.  Always being able to adapt to the new changes and coming up with new ideas for ones product to be noticed is a major key in todays fast changing society.

CBS This Morning Observations

A couple summers ago, I was lucky enough to observe behind the scenes of the CBS This Morning show. It taught me a lot about this type of field and pushed me into a more specific part of the industry I'd like to get into. It was an opportunity I couldn't miss and I'm very happy I did it because it taught me a lot about the field of broadcast journalism.

I observed some different areas of the studio. I was able to sit in the control room and watch how the crew all worked together as the show went on, I viewed how the "hard news" room worked, I sat in on some brainstorming meetings, went along with some interviews and a lot more. It was so interesting and educational. I didn't know before this how many different aspects go into to making a show like this- anything from the landscape shots they show to the weather in different areas of the country.

First, I didn't know how many people worked in a job like this because of the insane amount of different jobs that are needed; there were job titles I'd never even heard of before.

Second, it interested me how all these people had to work together to create the one show each day. It showed the importance of teamwork because, if they weren't on the same page, the show would be a disaster.

Third, it taught me patience and control. You must be calm at all times in a job like this because of it's fast pace. At one point, you may like a story you are about to broadcast but five minutes later something more important can come up and you have to make such big changes very quick. I saw this happen a couple times when sitting in the control room.

Watching all the behind-the-scenes work helped me realize I'd like to work in front of the camera. I've been told I have a good anchoring voice and I want to utilize it as well as my friendly personality. Some of the behind-the-scenes work was boring, but some was interesting. It made me want to get involved as soon as possible so I didn't have to watch but instead work.

Overall, it was an experience that was amazing. It blew my mind how much went on and how important every little aspect is to make the show run smoothly. It taught me so much and pushed me to work even harder towards what I want to do with my life.

Here are some different pictures of behind-the-scenes work:

Influence of Media on Youth

Growing up as an only child, I have had a lot of time to be productive, write my thoughts down, and even attempt to find my interests in life. Instead, I spent my time watching cartoons and playing video games. Some people would say a mind is a terrible thing to waste but I feel as though it were those very cartoons and video games that carved who I am today.

My favorite video game growing up was a game called Kingdom Hearts. Aside from it's mildly violent game play and complex storyline, this game taught me the importance of friends, dreams, persistence, peace and thousands of other concepts. None of my friends in school liked to play the game but I found it so interesting I decided to devote most of my time to not only playing, but studying the game. I knew how certain characters would react to other characters, I played it over and over to memorize the plot line, there wasn't much in this game that you could tell me didn't reflect back on real life. One of the most important lessons I learned from kingdom hearts was that if you want to change the world, you have to do it peacefully. The only thing violence can produce between two entities is more violence and the strongest weapon you had to fight the hate was love.
Cartoons, growing up, somehow carved my personality as an intellectual. They challenged me to look at situation sideways in order to get a whole new perspective. My generation of teenagers tend to be a lot more cynical and sarcastic than any other generation sole based off of where we gathered our sense of humor from. Knowing myself, I am a very sarcastic person. It literally is second nature to me to be sarcastic to you in the most unoffensive way possible.I feel like I can blame most of my sarcastic ways from shows like spongebob or fairly odd parents or apparently even sesame street!
Discovering myself through tv programs and video games was one of my favorite pass times and also allowed me to "escape" into another world sometimes. These types of media have influenced me to be the man I am today and still influence me to grow.

Is This a Farewell to the Beloved Amoeba Music?

Photo Credits: (Ricardo DeAratanha / Los Angeles Times)

Since the opening in 2001, Amoeba Music in Hollywood was known mostly known as a place for live music and one of the largest record stores in the greater Los Angeles Area that actually thrived at a time record shops were an endangered species.

A few weeks ago it was brought to attention that the famous store was going to be closed for good and turn into a luxury skyscraper.

This report by LAist brought fans and music lovers in total distress. The article said that Amoeba Records voluntarily decided to sell the property and that Councilman Mitch O’Farrell’s is going to try to work with the store to identify another location the would allow the mot rain in Hollywood.

After this article was released many news outlets and Amoeba Records themselves clarified the reports made by the LAist. Amoeba Records saw the reaction of the the public and decided to post a note to their music lovers on their twitter that would try and clarify peoples worries, concerns and questions.

Writing My First Game/News Story

For the MSU vs Northwestern football game I had to opportunity to write my first news/game story for MSU Focal Point News. It was very difficult to do for this first time because there is a different format and you use a different language when writing to the average person who would read a story like this.

Here is what I came up with:

New Quarterback, Same Story For MSU Football

On the 101st homecoming in East Lansing, Michigan, the Michigan State Spartans(2-4) lost to the Northwestern Wildcats(3-3) 54 to 40 in a shoot out.

For the first time in his college career Brian Lewerke lined up behind center as the Spartans starting quarterback. Lewerke is the first freshman to start a game for MSU since Steven Reaves in 2004 against Central Michigan.

This change comes after fifth year senior Tyler O'Connor had struggled through the first five games of the season.

From the get go Lewerke seemed to give this offense a spark and a swagger that it had been lacking all season. Lewerke hit RJ Shelton down the seem for 33 yards to complete his first pass and on the second drive came the first spartan score under the Lewerke Era. Lewerke began the drive by showing off his wheels, something that O'Connor previously struggled with, to lead the Spartans inside the red zone and would hit Josiah Price for a 15 yard touchdown two plays later.

After the game Lewerke said about getting his first touchdown off of his shoulders, “ It was pretty cool….having it to Josiah who has the most touchdown catches for a tight end ever was pretty cool.”

That touchdown increased Price’s school record for touchdowns by a tight end to 19 in his career.

As the offense excelled in the early goings so did the Spartan defense whose leader, linebacker Riley Bullough, returned from a shoulder injury after missing three games. On Northwestern’s second drive of the game freshman Justin Layne snagged his first career interception and returned it 41 yards to make it a 14-0 lead in favor of the green and white.

This was the first time the Spartans had scored more than seven points in the first quarter of any game this season.

Just as the Spartan fanbase felt comfortable the Wildcats struck back.

Northwestern would cut into the spartan lead with just over three minutes to go in the first quarter when running back Justin Jackson scooted down the left side line for a 29 yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 14-7.

45 seconds into the second quarter Michael Gieger would increase the spartan’s lead to 17-7 with a 41 yard field goal. But Spartan fans have seen this story play out before.

Michigan State’s offense would once again get conservative and the Wildcats continued to cut into the spartan lead by answering Geiger’s field goal with a 12 play 75 yard drive that ended in a nine yard touchdown pass from quarterback Clayton Thorson to senior wide receiver Austin Carr to make it a 17-14 game.

All the momentum seemed to shift in Northwestern’s favor. After a MSU penalty had negated a long kickoff return the Spartans were pinned inside their own five yard line. On third down Lewerke would be slammed to the ground by defensive lineman Joe Gaziano, who beat left tackle Miguel Machado, for a safety to make it a 17-16 lead for the spartans.

The Wildcats would take their first lead of the game with just under 7 minutes to go in the first half as kicker Jack Mitchell added a 33 yard field go to make a 19-17 lead for the visitors and that score would hold going into the locker room.

The halftime break did not cool off the Wildcat offense. Northwestern opened the second half with a four play drive that ended in a 57 yard touchdown pass from Thorson to Flynn Nagel who got lost in coverage by Justin Layne to make it 26-17.

With just under 7 minutes in the third quarter Thorson tried to make it certain that the Spartans would not be able to come back in the game by finishing a 10 play drive with a nine yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 33-17. The touchdown made it a 26-0 scoring run for the Wildcat offense.

Michigan State Coach Mark Dantonio had seen enough of the offense under the commands of his redshirt freshman and gave the keys back to Tyler O’Conner. Once again a quarterback change would provide another needed spark.

With just under six minutes left in the third quarter O’Conner found RJ Shelton for a 59 yard touchdown pass that was caught off of a tip. The Spartans cut the Northwestern lead to 33-24.

The Spartan offense continued to roll under O’Connor as he hit RJ Shelton for his second touchdown of the game on an 86 yard pass to cut the wildcat lead to 33-31 with two minutes to go in the third quarter.

After the game Coach Dantonio had this to say about his switch at signal caller, “ I thought Lewerke did some good things in the game….The game sort of caught up to him in the second quarter a little bit so we made the decision to go back to Tyler, which was the plan if Brian played poor”

As Spartan fans began to rise from their seats again, junior wide receiver Solomon Vault quickly sat them back down by returning the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to bring the Wildcat lead back up to nine at 40-31.

Justin Jackson would put the nail in the spartan coffin with 8 minutes remaining in the game when he broke a tackle on the way to a 26 yard touchdown run, his second of the game. The Wildcats led 47-31.

Michigan State would add a late score with a nine yard touchdown pass from O’Conner to freshman Donnie Corley and cut the Wildcat lead to 47-37 with a failed two-point conversion.

Just to make sure there was no fight left in the spartan’s back pocket Thorson found Carr for his second touchdown, this one from 29 yards out, to increase the wildcat’s lead to 54-31.

Gieger would add one more field goal to finish off the scoring for the night with a final score 54-40.

As the Wildcat offense continued to impose their will, the same problems that have plagued the Michigan State defense continued throughout the game. The Spartan defense yet again struggled to get off the field on third down as Northwestern converted 10 of their 19 opportunities.

Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson shredded the MSU secondary all game to the tune of 281 yards and three touchdowns as well as a rushing touchdown of his own.

The MSU rush defense was just as bad if not worse than the secondary by giving up 205 yards on the ground with three touchdowns. Northwestern running back Justin Jackson accounted for 188 of those yards as well as two of the three touchdowns.

In total the MSU defense gave up well over 400 total yards of offense to a team that scored seven points at home against FCS Illinois State earlier in the season.

On the offensive side of the ball MSU received average quarterback play from both Lewerke and O’Conner.  The starter, Lewerke, finished with 99 yards passing and that one touchdown pass to Price before getting the heave hoe in the second half. O’Connor came in and played some of his best football he has all season to the tune of 281 yards, three touchdowns, and one pick, though most of it coming in garbage time.

With the victory Northwestern has beaten Michigan State for the first time since the 2012 campaign and now has two straight wins in East Lansing. This is also the most points a spartan defense has given up against the wildcats since the 2007 season when Northwestern beat the spartans 48-41.

This is the first four game losing streak for MSU football since a stretch from October 28, 2006 to November 18, 2006 that included losses to: Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, and Penn State.

With bowl game hopes now hanging by a thread the Spartans will travel to College Park, Maryland next week to take on DJ Durkin’s terrapins who have lost two straight games of their own.

The Importance of Storytelling in Marketing

I came across an online article that explains the importance of storytelling when it comes to strengthening your brand. The author stated that “Storytelling could bring your brand to life and strengthen your marketing impact”.

The Kickstarter campaign started out asking only for $10 to make potato salad but then ended up making over $55,000. This showed us that the true power of storytelling in phenomenal. People contribute to a company not only from desire but simply because they could relate to the story that was being presented.

This article gives examples of different marketing brands that used a good story that brought in a lot of consumers. Last year it was seen that the Coca-Cola’s Share a Coke campaign was very successful. This campaign made people feel as if they were obligated to buy a bottle for their friend because it had their name printed on the bottle. One thing that stuck out in this article was that this campaign wasn’t about telling the public a story, it was about giving the public the ability to tell their own wonderful story, to where they could relate.

It was stated that storytelling can be used as a marketing strategy by businesses and entities of all sizes because all it requires imagination and creativity, not just money.

You can uses multiple sources to start your own story, a multitude of businesses have developed them to help you such as The Story Telling and Brand Story Online.

A brand’s story is no longer limited to or controlled by the media outlets and advertising that it uses. The media now runs stories based on how much traction they’ve gained elsewhere.

Storytelling is so compelling and powerful because most people won’t remember the name of the individual in a commercial but they will remember the story behind them. Often as consumers and the audience we only pay attention to logic and numbers, believing that those factors are something that can’t be ignored. We as consumers do forget that emotional gut felling we have that guides so many of our decisions.

Remember, that if a story spreads its a story worth remembering. The mission of businesses using storytelling as a marketing tool should be to help customers connect the stories they tell to benefit their product. When developing your own story you need to identify how your product helps your customers. What problems it solve? What benefits, not features, does it offer? What makes your solution different from the competitors?

This article was very informal, it gave information on a topic that I didn’t necessarily look at. It showed us the power of storytelling in the media and also in your own company, Just take your time and make a story that people can relate  to.
