#1 Asking Questions and Breaking Assumptions

Why is Media Important?
Media is important because it influences our everyday lives and decisions. There was a study I recently covered for a project in my Understanding Media and Info class about if Social media makes you smarter or dumber. The result of the study was that thinking and linking together as one people on a social media website increased the flow of group analytical thinking but decreased the flow of individual analytical thinking.

Are their different types of media devices besides social media?
In media there are plenty of different types of devices besides social media as a means to communicate an idea or express a thought. Social can be utilized to access some of the devices though. Like when using social, you can organize event groups. For example today, Facebook was used to organize a rally in support of anti bigotry, racism and discrimination at 5:30 today. Media can also be used in advertisement form in which someone is persuaded to purchase a product or use a resource in order to profit the owner of the resource or product. This type of advertising could be through a television, radio station, internet website and the list goes on.

Is there money in the media?
There is a phenomenal amount of money in media. If you think about it, media controls every aspect of our lives. If we didn't have media we wouldn't know what to buy, what to like/dislike, what to eat and even what to wear. Media could market anything at all to us and we would by it because the media said so. But who is the media? As a matter of fact we are. So in a cycle of using and following media we ultimately tell each other to use certain products or services. This is why people pursue field in media because it is almost self sufficient. All it takes is an idea.

Is there bad media?
I know now that there is such a thing as bad media. Bad media is misleading and does not support your moral beliefs. Even though we know it doesn't support our beliefs we still chose to utilize it. For example, the corporation McDonalds has been marketing "happy meals to kids ever since they were created. But a movie (aha another source of media) called "Food Inc." exposes McDonalds for all the dastardly unhealthy ways they make our food items. The craziest part is, the bad media is so set on taking money from you that they market you items that will shorten your life span.

How does media play a role in benefiting society?
Media plays a role in benefiting society by connecting everyone. This election is the biggest, most impactful example. Donald Trump won the presidency which we were all able to witness through some type of media whether it your television, radio, twitter or anything. Once he won, people were going through extreme anxiety and as a result the suicide hotlines were busy. This outlet that helps talk people through extremely rough times, was closed. Media can help benefit society by providing moral support and many other things.

The book I used for this was my "Media Now: Understanding Media, Culture and Technology" book for my Understanding Media and Info class (MI 101)
