Prompt #6 Developing Journalism

Journalism is a shifting industry. Like most fields of work, they are constantly evolving as technology enhances and new ideas are created. Journalism started as newspapers and then moved to television then to apps on our smartphones. We don't know where it will go next, but we can reflect on what's it has done and what it has done positively and negatively.

An article published in SAGE Publications Journalism explains some key points that should be considered in this developing field. This article describes how the show The Newsroom received negative feedback from critiques because of its depiction of the profession. The article goes against these statements by explaining how those critiques realized the truth. It states, "The closing and/or downsizing of many US newspapers are just one indication that the industry and the institution of journalism are suffering." As this many be true for the newspaper side of journalism, as that side decreases, the more mobile and technical side increases.

The article also talks about how "journalism has gone through several crises during the past century, especially during structural and technological changes." This is very true because, as I've stated, it's shifted from newspaper to apps. Also, what is shown to us has changed a lot over the years too to accommodate to what we find interesting. It's added things like health to the already broadcasted topics like news and weather.

This article mostly explains how The Newsroom was attacked but made many points that relate to the overall field of journalism. "The rise of the Internet has created many opportunities for journalists but also has dealt serious blows to journalism," it claims. This is also very true for many reasons. First, the creation of the Internet pulled people away from the physical work that started the field. Second, the creation made so many new opportunities for journalists from bloggers to photographers.

Overall, as the world becomes more technologically advanced, the field of journalism shifts but also remains the same. There are still newspapers that are printed everyday, but quicker and easier ways of getting the information is there also. It all depends on the person wants the latest updates.
