Mass Hysteria/Predictions

Nowadays, forms of media like TV shows and movies have gotten better at creating real life situations that could actually possibly happen. Humans are great at predicting and creating predicaments just to logically solve them. Last week I discovered a British TV show called Black Mirror in which the episodes are set up in a twilight zone type of matter. Each episode is an independent story. Each episode somehow involves a form of technology or media that puts the characters in invigorating situations. In the very first episode the princess of Great Britain by a terrorist organization. The Prime minister is responsible for finding her but the catch is that in order to get her back, at the demand of the terrorist, the prime minister must have sexual intercourse with a pig. The video of the terrorist threat was put up on youtube first.

This immediately made the issue a world matter. Youtube is accessible to everyone in the world who owns a computer. This video of the princess giving the demand of the terrorist went viral in a matter of hours. The more this video was shared around, the more crucial is was for the prime minister to find the princess. At first, the public voted in a poll someone mad that 76% did not want the prime minister to have sex with a pig and focus on finding the princess. About an hour after the poll, another video was released showing one of the terrorist severing the princess' finger. Another vote was drawn and out of mass hysteria and public fear, 86% of the world thought the prime minister should have sex with a pig in order to get the princess back. This is the effect fear has on the public. A simple video made an extreme statement over the entire globe.
