In my article from The Madisonian, Blogger, Abigail Dennis, talked about the importance of how some journalism major graduates go to work for local newspapers instead of big companies and how important that is to the community. In the article it states, "Many consumers expect news for free, at their fingertips. But the reality of living in rural areas means that is not usually possible, especially if you want current and accurate reporting." Local newspapers brings people some stories that bigger news companies do not believe to be "news worthy" at all. For pop;e who live in these smaller towns this is the only newspaper they may receive. It is their only source for new stories and breaking news from their town. Without it they would not be "in the know". Its true that if people from smaller towns wanted more news resources they could just go online and search things from their but it is most likely not locally news. This is what my other news story refers to. In a post from The Times, writer, Lisa Micco says, "Sure, you may get your news from Facebook, Twitter, Google and Yahoo, but it's typically the retooled work of a newspaper reporter. It's also not locally centric. Those outlets don’t have the staff to develop trusted and knowledgeable sources or even know the area well enough to know the difference between Beaver and Beaver Falls." This is what makes locally news stories different.

We agree, local newspapers are important. Things happening within communities derive from what is published in local newspapers. The story starts there and some how through popularity, it may grow and reach a national audience. Plus, they are important for keeping communities together and informed.
ReplyDeleteWe agree especially here in East Lansing, "The State News" keeps the MSU community and Lansing community connected.
